Писатель, поэт-романтик. Один из самых выдающихся американских писателей XIX века.

Родился в Бостоне,
в семье странствующих актеров. После смерти матери в 1811 г. Эдгара разлучили с братом и сестрой - его взяла на воспитание семья табачного торговца Джона Аллана. Учился в Виргинском университете, но из-за скупости отчима и карточных долгов вынужден был оставить университет, а впоследствии и военную академию. Как поэт дебютировал сборником "Тамерлан и другие стихотворения" (1827). После того как его рассказ "Рукопись, найденная в бутылке" (1836) выиграл конкурс на лучшую новеллу, По стал редактором журнала "Южный литературный вестник"; он также возглавлял и другие литературные издания. В 1836 г. женился на своей 14-летней кузине Виргинии. В 1838 г. вышла в свет "Повесть о приключениях Артура Гордона Пима", а в 1840 г. в двух томах был издан сборник "Гротески и арабески". После смерти Виргинии в 1847 г. По впал в депрессию, пытался покончить с собой, пристрастился к алкоголю и умер два года спустя.
